Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado Returns Home After Months in Exile

Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado reappeared in Venezuela on Sunday for the first time since December, as questions grow about the country's democratic future.

Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel laureate María Corina Machado has returned to her country. She resurfaced in Venezuela on Sunday, her first appearance there since December, roughly a month before the U.S. military removed then-President Nicolás Maduro from power.

Machado announced her arrival herself on social media. "I am here. With you," she wrote.

Fellow opposition figure Edmundo Gonzalez confirmed the news in a post on X. He said he would be at her side "very soon." He called the moment a significant one for Venezuelans, writing that their "sovereign voice returns with her to lead and guide this process!" He added: "You know it, this is until the end."

Her return after more than 10 months abroad comes as doubts deepen over where Venezuela's democracy is headed, and over what part the United States will play. Since Maduro was ousted, the country has been governed by acting President Delcy Rodríguez, a longtime ally of Maduro. Rodríguez received the Trump administration's blessing to take over from him.

Rodríguez has now stayed in the role longer than she was authorized to after Maduro's capture, and no election has been scheduled.

Machado's path back has been a long one. She spent 11 months in hiding inside Venezuela after being briefly detained following a protest in January 2025. She later left the country in a clandestine escape. She then reappeared in December in Norway, where she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her peaceful challenge to Maduro's authoritarian government.

Since then, Machado and her allies have pressed for a firm date for a presidential election in Venezuela. U.S. officials, however, have stressed that stabilizing the economy should come first, leaving a gap between the opposition's demands and Washington's stated priorities.

With Machado back on Venezuelan soil, attention now turns to how she and the rest of the opposition will push their case for a vote, and how the acting government and its American backers will respond.
